Loan institutions traditionally utilize collateral as a means of insuring the repayment of a loan. They also tend to favor large loans, generally taken by wealthy individuals and large businesses and corporations. Micro-credit operates on much a much smaller scale, and while the purpose of money loaning is profit, many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) utilize small scale money lending to empower the poor, and alleviate poverty. Chowdhury et al., define micro-credit as, “Essentially the dispersion of small collateral-free loans to groups of jointly liable borrowers in order to foster income generation and poverty reduction through enhancing self-employment” (298). As Adam Smith said, in The Wealth of Nations, “When you have got a little, it is often easy to get more. The great difficulty is to get that little” (in Subrahmanyam, 1). (more…)
Language myths often disseminate quickly, and can prove difficult to expel. For immigrants learning a second language, one such myth seems particularly relevant. The ease and equality of learning a second language predominates popular discourse, particularly with regard to immigrants entering the country, and the workforce. One factor often overlooked is the social and cultural context which develops when gender is considered. Gender identity plays an important role in access to, utilization of and achievement in second language learning. (more…)
